About the course

This course is a foundational study of Ash’ari theology as covered in the text Umm Al-Barahin (Foundational Proofs) by Imam Al-Sanusi. The course will analyze the methodology of the Ash’ari school of theology within the bounds of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah in understanding Ilahiyat (belief in Allah), Nabawiyat (belief in prophets), and Sam’iyat. This includes an examination of numerous matters that are discussed under these categories such as the Attributes of Allah ﷻ, rational proofs for His ﷻ existence, natural philosophy, attributes of His ﷻ messengers, and free will. This course will also introduce the science of ‘Ilm ul-Kalam, its development, objectives, and discuss its possibility of reformation.

Ustadh Asad Khan

Ustadh Hafiz Asad Khan has a Bachelors in Economics and is a graduate of the Madina Institute’s 1-Year Intensive Associate’s Degree Program in Islamic & Arabic Studies. Following graduation from the program, he continued his studies in the sciences of Hadith, Usul al-Fiqh and Aqidah under the supervision of Shaykh Muhammad al-Ninowy with the focus of his study and research being the science of Aqidah, the paradigm of Ashari and Maturidi thinking, and the possible contemporary application of their ideas to respond to modern challenges. He is currently serving as the executive director at Madina Institute in Atlanta, Georgia.
